(too old to reply)

I'm looking for inexpensive tuners for an old Yairi guitar. (~$40-60 range)
that have 32mm roller spacing. All I can find are 35mm.

TIA!

I've seen older Alvarez-Yairi guitars with 36mm spacing.

Are you measuring "center to center" on the rollers? (center of the
attchment screws)

Yes, measured CTC. The 35mm Schallers my friend bought don't fit (I'm
installing them for him.) I cleaned up the originals and put them back on.
Two of the knob arms (nomen?) are bent. This guitar has not been well cared
for, but that was before my friend bought it. I also put some cheap trebles
on it ("Lisa" strings) and D'Addario bases (what I had...) and the "d" on
string 1 is bad... otherwise, it sounds not bad for what it is.

Sorry to hear this - I have a guitar with goofy roller spacing - I built
it myself - that was pretty much the crowning touch on an awful guitar. :-)

You might be able to replace the old worm and gear gear set with one
from a new set but that's pure speculation on my part. Don't throw the
old mounting plate away.

Drop David Schramm an emil. He has a box of old machine heads. I
Think the old Goya guitars had a small spacing.

You can get individual single tuners that will fit any spacing. They aren't
joined together on a plate but rather six separate pieces.

Thinking about it more you could plug up the holes with a dowel and
redrill for 35mm ( if your handy with a drill ) otherwise perhaps pay
someone to do it.

In this case, the current tuners were so bad that it was worth it to get a
$50-or-so set of Schaller's. However, the guitar is not really worth that
more more to invest in it. If it was, then that would be a cool way to
correct the probem. Maybe that dead "d" on the 1st string has me bummed out
about it. I'll put a D'Addario on it when I get home and see if that makes
it better.

Just plug the two outside holes.

Fustero make individual tuners, but they're certainly not in the price range
you quote. http://www.fernandezmusic.com/FusteroGuitarTuners.html.

Thanks, Nick. Yes, I'm familiar with the fusteros. A friend of mine used
them for his 8 string guitar.
